This "society" or "club" was started by Dr Ann Foster
(Ph.D.) Chartered Psychologist (AB), through her class on the health benefits of friendships. Her goal was to provide
an opportunity for mature women (who for a variety of reasons found themselves with few or no social connections) to make
friends. To achieve this goal, Dr Ann offers sessions for four to six people at a time. The only criteria for attending these
small group sessions are 1) a desire to make friends, and 2) a willingness to offer friendship. Participants' past history
is not focused upon; this is not group therapy. During small group sessions, the emphasis is on enjoying interaction with
each other in the present moment. Educational materials on the health benefits of social connectedness are given and discussed,
and getting-to-know you activities are done. After three sessions at the small group level, integration into the large group
occurs.
So far, we have had several informal social gatherings
doing a variety of activities and several formal dinner nights. All were quite successful. There are more of both
to be planned.
